About Umbrellas

Umbrellas are used for rainy days to protect people from the rain.

Umbrellas are also used for sunny days - but these types of umbrellas are called "parasols".

The word umbrella originated from the Latin word "umbra" which means shade.

The word parasol can be broken down into two stems para and sol. Para means "protect against" and "sol" means sun.

In French, an umbrella is known as a "parapluie". This has two parts, para and pluie. Pluie is the noun for rain in French.
